I’ve been in Canada for the last 5 weeks with nothing to do but work and create. It has been such an artistically productive time for me without the normal distractions of life. I’ve been getting up at 4am to start working on my projects and staying up until midnight or later every night because I’ve never been so excited about what I’m working on.
The biggest thing that has come out of it is learning how to composite images to create the artistic picture in my head. What you see in my work above are composites of some of my photography and photos of my paintings. They meld together to create the thing that I could never quite get down on canvas using my hands. I’ve tried hard for many years now but always had a really hard time getting things to click into place in the way that I could envision them.
It has been an AMAZING experience to finally be able to do that! To find this technique and learn it has opened whole new creative avenues for me and I think it will be hard to dedicate time to do anything else from here on out…
It started with a random pretty photo on Instagram where the author of the post mentioned a little video that could show you how to combine two images. After watching that I spent several days researching everything I could on this technique and it was a huge rabbit hole that led me to taking 4 online courses at the same time and engaging in a couple of online communities that focus on this kind of work. It has been a wild ride and there is still so much to learn but it has given me so much in terms of the freedom to create exactly what I want to create.
I’m always looking for new and better ways to combine my photography with my painting to achieve the effects I want. The only methods I previously had for doing so were painstakingly tedious and extremely time consuming. This is actually time consuming too, but it feels like a much more creative process and hours go by before I even realize it because it’s just such a joy to work this way. It’s the game changer I didn’t know I was looking for.
If you have any interest in learning how to composite photos using your phone, this is a good place to start (not an affiliate link): https://creativemobileartistry.com/launchpromotion There are probably many free tutorials that could be found as well, but this class was fascinating.
Shortly, I’ll be heading back to Denver for a few weeks back in the office. Planning the next Antarctic season is well underway and now I have a whole new perspective to take to my next trip to the ice as I work to capture the magic of the South Pole in new ways.
I hope you’re all enjoying a gentle Earth Day in this year that feels like it has never been more important to protect her…
